This lager is brewed using barley that was grown and malted within 100 miles of our brewery at Sugar Creek Malt, just over the border in Indiana. Caleb and Whitney, the owners of Sugar Creek, visited England in 2016 and came back with 200 grams of seed of this old barley. Originally bred outside of Vienna during the demise of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this varietal was released after World War I but following World War II, it was all but forgotten about… until now. A barley originating at the turn of the last century requires lots of special processing but we think it is worth it to have this window into the past. We get notes of bread, dough, with hints of hay and a honey-like sweetness.
